when i grow up…

The work of Philly artist Aubrie Costello reflect the thoughts and struggles of most girls growing up. Her installations question the gender roles implied while exploring femininity and sexuality. They fixate on human desire, both primal and innate, and on relationships, both broad and intimate, creating an uncomfortable tension. Even the mediums that she uses, combining delicate precious dupioni silk with hard metal nails, echos the uneasiness of finding balance in contradiction. It is an uncomfortable tension, yet the viewer feels compelled to examine it.

Aubrie Costello is currently exhibiting at the BUS STOP Boutique (Philadelphia) that runs from February 1st through April 1st. It is titled “For the Love of Shoes” and is a story of a girl and her shoes. The opening artist reception is on February 25th, from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm.
